The site represents a reuse of an earlier rath, or Irish ringfort, which was subsequently adapted to serve as the bailey during the Norman period. The monument dates to the early Christian and medieval periods, with the motte-and-bailey fortification representing a typical Norman earthwork defence structure of the twelfth century. The site survives as an earthwork monument with the characteristic mound and outer defensive enclosure that exemplifies the transitional architecture of post-Norman settlement in Ulster.
