Catcraig limekilns and limestone quarry is an industrial monument in East Lothian, Scotland, protected by Historic Environment Scotland. The site exploits the local geology, quarrying limestone from the underlying Strathclyde Group sedimentary rocks formed during the Visean period. These rocks provided a readily accessible raw material for lime production, a crucial industry in agricultural and building contexts across Scotland from the medieval period onwards.
Limekilns and quarries of this type were essential infrastructure in rural economies, converting raw limestone into quicklime through heating in kilns. The quicklime produced could be slaked with water to create slaked lime for mortar, plaster and agricultural use as a soil amendment. The presence of suitable stone at Catcraig made this location valuable for sustained exploitation.
