Caves under Nos 3-7 Middle Pavement is a series of rock-cut chambers situated beneath properties on Middle Pavement in Nottingham. The caves are characteristic of the extensive medieval sandstone quarrying and cave-dwelling tradition for which Nottingham is notable, formed through the extraction of building stone from the underlying Bunter sandstone. Dating from the medieval period, these caves represent both utilitarian quarrying activity and subsequent domestic or commercial adaptation of the excavated spaces. The site demonstrates the significant medieval use of subterranean areas in Nottingham's urban development, a practice that shaped the town's archaeological character and continues to define parts of the historic city centre.
