Overview

History & significance

Clapper Bridge at Postbridge is a medieval or possibly earlier stone bridge consisting of large slabs of granite laid across stone piers to span the East Dart River on Dartmoor. The bridge comprises two spans formed by massive stone slabs, each measuring approximately 4 metres in length, supported on substantial granite piers set into the riverbed. Although often cited as of considerable antiquity, the precise date of construction remains uncertain, with scholarly opinion generally placing it within the medieval period, though some structural elements may be of earlier origin. The bridge represents an important example of vernacular stone construction suited to moorland conditions and continues to carry a moorland track across the river at Postbridge.
