Overview

History & significance

Coalport Inclined Plane is a remnant of the industrial transport infrastructure constructed in Shropshire during the late eighteenth century. Built to facilitate the movement of coal and other goods between different levels at the Coalport works, the inclined plane represents a significant development in mechanical engineering during the Industrial Revolution. The structure employed a rope-and-pulley system powered by stationary engines to haul laden wagons up steep gradients, avoiding the need for conventional rail routes across difficult terrain. As a surviving example of this technology, the site demonstrates the industrial ingenuity applied to transport problems in the Severn Gorge coalfield, a region central to Britain's early industrialisation.
