College of St Mary Magdalene at Battlefield is a late medieval foundation established in the aftermath of the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. The college was endowed by Henry IV to commemorate those who fell in the battle and to serve as a place of prayer for the souls of the dead. Founded in 1407, the institution comprised a small community of priests who maintained the chantry services within the collegiate church. The surviving structures, notably the fifteenth-century church with its distinctive tower, represent one of the finest examples of late medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Shropshire and remain a testament to the piety and political motives of early Tudor royal patronage.
