The College of St Mary Magdalene at Battlefield is a collegiate foundation established in the early fifteenth century on the site of the Battle of Shrewsbury, fought in 1403. Founded by Henry IV in 1408 as an act of piety and commemoration, the college was endowed to support a master, chaplains, and chantry priests who would pray for the souls of those killed in the battle. The surviving structures include the collegiate church, which retains its original late medieval character with characteristic perpendicular features typical of early fifteenth-century ecclesiastical architecture. The foundation remained active until its dissolution during the Reformation, and the site represents an important example of how medieval piety and political authority combined to commemorate a significant moment in English history.
