Overview

History & significance

Corgarff Castle is a sixteenth-century tower house located in upper Deeside, Aberdeenshire, which was substantially rebuilt and refortified during the eighteenth century as a military stronghold. The castle consists of a four-storey square stone tower surrounded by a distinctive star-shaped defensive wall or "star fort" constructed between 1748 and 1751 following the Jacobite Rising of 1745, when the British government established it as a barracks to control the Highlands and suppress cattle raiding. The original tower, erected around 1537, was substantially altered during this military reconstruction to serve as accommodation and garrison quarters. The site represents an important example of post-1746 military architecture in Scotland and remains a notable demonstration of how medieval fortifications were adapted to meet eighteenth-century strategic requirements.
