Overview

History & significance

Coupar Angus Abbey is a medieval Benedictine monastery founded in 1164 by the Earl of Strathern in Angus, Scotland. The abbey precinct contains the remains of the monastic complex, including foundations and structural elements characteristic of twelfth-century ecclesiastical establishments, arranged around a central cloister. The site was dissolved during the Scottish Reformation in the sixteenth century, after which its buildings gradually fell into ruin. The abbey lands subsequently passed into secular ownership, and elements of the precinct boundaries remain visible in the modern landscape of the town of Coupar Angus.
