Crinan Canal is a navigable waterway connecting Loch Crinan to Loch Gilp in Argyllshire, Scotland, constructed in the early nineteenth century to provide a maritime shortcut between the Atlantic and the Clyde estuary. Designed by John Rennie and completed in 1801, the canal measures approximately nine miles in length and incorporates a series of locks to manage the difference in water levels between its terminal lochs. The canal's construction represented a significant engineering achievement of the period and was developed to facilitate commercial shipping and fishing traffic, avoiding the lengthy passage around the Mull of Kintyre. The route passes through Cairnbaan, where substantial remains of the canal infrastructure, including locks and associated stonework, survive and form an important part of Scotland's inland waterway heritage.
