History & significance

The Graves of the Clans, Cairn and Well of the Dead is a monument group located on Culloden Battlefield in Inverness-shire, Scotland, commemorating those killed in the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The site comprises a cairn erected to mark the mass burial ground of the Jacobite dead, individual clan grave markers, and a well that traditionally provided water to the battlefield. The cairn was constructed in the nineteenth century, though the graves themselves mark burial sites established immediately following the battle. The monument complex represents one of the principal memorials to the Highland clans and individuals who fell during the final engagement of the Jacobite Rising, a significant event in Scottish military and cultural history.
