The incline was constructed to transport slate extracted from the quarry down the steep valley sides, exploiting gravity to move heavy loads along wooden or iron rails. Such inclines were essential infrastructure in slate-producing regions, allowing quarrymen to move finished slate and waste material efficiently from the working face to collection points or processing areas below.
The quarry sits upon Caradoc Rocks of Caradocian age, a sequence of mudstone, siltstone and sandstone that forms the underlying geology of the site. These sedimentary rocks, laid down during the Ordovician period, provide the layered stone that slate quarries throughout Wales sought to extract. The solid bedrock beneath Cwm Penmachno would have dictated both the quarrying methods employed and the stability of the incline structure itself.
The surviving remains of the incline represent the technological heritage of Wales's slate industry, which reached its peak in the nineteenth century.
