Overview

History & significance

Derwentcote steel cementation furnace is a rare surviving example of early industrial metalworking infrastructure located near Consett in County Durham. The site comprises a cementation furnace, associated iron finery forge, and drift coal mine, representing the integrated production processes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The cementation furnace, constructed of stone and brick, was used to convert bar iron into blister steel through a labour-intensive heating process with carbonaceous material, a technique fundamental to steel production before the development of crucible methods. The survival of these structures, together with evidence of coal extraction on the same site, provides significant archaeological testimony to early modern industrial practice and the exploitation of local resources in North East England.
