Ebchester is a Roman auxiliary fort situated in County Durham that served as the military station of Vindomora along Hadrian's Wall frontier system. The fort was established in the second century AD and remained an active garrison throughout the Roman occupation of Britain, primarily housing cavalry units tasked with patrolling and defending the region. The site preserves substantial archaeological remains including the characteristic defensive ditches and internal structures typical of Roman military installations, though much of the stone fortification has been quarried away over subsequent centuries. Vindomora held strategic importance as one of several forts positioned to support the broader defensive network of the Wall and its associated road systems across northern Britain.
