The village was abandoned during the late medieval period, likely as a result of the economic and social disruptions that affected rural communities in northern England from the fourteenth century onwards. Archaeological evidence and surviving earthworks indicate the former presence of domestic and agricultural structures characteristic of a medieval farming settlement. The site remains of archaeological significance as a record of medieval rural settlement patterns and desertion processes in the Border region.
