Dod Enclosure is a post-medieval enclosure located on Gray Coat in Roxburghshire, south-east Scotland, approximately 530 metres south-west of the main settlement. The site is situated on bedrock of the Hawick Group, a hard wacke formed during the Wenlock period of the Silurian, which gives the moorland landscape its characteristic grey-toned terrain. This geology provided both the building material and the challenging conditions typical of the upland borderlands between Scotland and England.
The enclosure represents the pattern of settlement and land management that developed in the post-medieval period, particularly from the sixteenth century onwards, when agricultural reorganisation and pastoral farming shaped the Scottish borders. The walled or dyked boundary would have served to contain livestock on the exposed moorland, reflecting the economic importance of sheep and cattle herding to rural communities in this region.
