Overview

History & significance

Dunaverty Castle is a late medieval stronghold situated on a rocky promontory at the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula in Argyllshire. The castle, which dates from the fifteenth century, comprises the remains of a stone-built fortress with defensive walls adapted to the natural contours of its defensive headland position. The site occupies a strategically important location controlling the southern approaches to the Firth of Clyde and the waters between Kintyre and the Isle of Arran. The castle saw significant military action during the seventeenth century, particularly during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, when it was besieged and taken by forces under the Earl of Argyll in 1647.
