Dunsmill Farm settlement, 125 metres north-north-east of the farm, is a Bronze Age or Iron Age settlement in Berwickshire. The site lies on bedrock of the Inverclyde Group, sedimentary rocks of Carboniferous age comprising sandstone, siltstone and mudstone that underlie much of the rolling border landscape. The agricultural setting typical of such settlements would have offered access to both arable land and grazing grounds across the surrounding moorland and valley floors.
The monument survives as an archaeological site rather than visible surface features. Settlements of this date in the Borders commonly comprise scattered stone-built structures with associated field systems, though surface evidence is frequently slight. The Inverclyde Group bedrock, whilst suitable for construction, would have required considerable labour to extract usable stone.
The settlement is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM12542, recognising its archaeological significance within the prehistoric settlement pattern of Berwickshire. Sites of this nature contribute important evidence to understanding Bronze Age and Iron Age land use, community organisation and adaptation to the Borders' upland and lowland transitional environment.
