Overview

History & significance

The Earthworks of Surrey Iron Railway is a scheduled ancient monument comprising the surviving linear earthwork traces of the pioneering Surrey Iron Railway, which operated between 1803 and 1846. The railway was one of the earliest public railways in Britain, constructed to transport goods including lime, stone, and agricultural products from the Croydon area to Wandsworth and the Thames. The earthwork remains visible as raised beds, embankments, and occasional cuttings that follow the original route of the tramway, which employed horse-drawn wagons running on cast iron rails laid on stone sleeper blocks. The monument represents an important phase in the development of British industrial transport infrastructure during the early nineteenth century and is preserved as evidence of this significant engineering and commercial enterprise.
