Edlingham Castle is a fortified manor house of late medieval date, situated in Northumberland near the village of Edlingham. The site comprises a substantial tower house, known as the solar tower, which represents the principal residential structure and dates from the fourteenth century, together with associated defensive works and ancillary buildings of the fortified complex. The tower exemplifies the characteristic form of northern English medieval domestic architecture, combining residential comfort with defensive capability appropriate to the unstable border region. The castle remained in use through the medieval period and represents an important example of the fortified manorial settlements that dominated the landscape of northern England during the later Middle Ages.
