Eggbuckland Keep is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle located near Plymouth in Devon, England. The site consists of an earthen mound or motte with an associated bailey, representing a typical form of Anglo-Norman defensive architecture from the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The keep itself, constructed as a stone tower upon the motte, demonstrates the transition from purely earthwork fortifications to more substantial stone construction characteristic of the period following the Norman Conquest. Though now largely ruinous, the monument preserves evidence of medieval military engineering and settlement patterns in Devon during the Norman period.
