Overview

History & significance

Staddon Heights Defences is a complex of nineteenth-century coastal fortifications located on the eastern side of the entrance to Plymouth Sound in Devon. The site comprises Fort Staddon, constructed between 1859 and 1862 as part of the Palmerston Forts programme to defend against anticipated French invasion, together with associated batteries including Brownhill Battery, Watch House Battery, Staddon Heights Battery and Staddon Battery. The fortifications were built as polygonal casemated works typical of mid-Victorian military engineering, designed to mount heavy artillery for coastal defence. The ensemble represents a significant example of Victorian-era defensive architecture and strategic planning for the protection of Plymouth's naval dockyard and maritime approaches.
