World War II Heavy Anti-aircraft gunsite, 100m west of Princes Cottages is a military defensive installation constructed during the Second World War to protect against aerial attack. The site dates from the period 1939–1945 and represents the air defence infrastructure established across Devon during the German aerial campaign. As a heavy anti-aircraft gunsite, it would have been equipped with larger calibre weapons designed to engage enemy aircraft at significant altitude and distance. The designation reflects the strategic importance of Devon's coastal and inland positions during wartime, with such gun positions forming part of the integrated air defence network protecting the county from Luftwaffe operations.
