Overview

History & significance

Egremont Castle is a Norman fortification situated in the market town of Egremont in west Cumberland. The castle was founded in the early twelfth century by William de Meschincs as a motte-and-bailey stronghold commanding the River Ehen valley. The surviving earthworks comprise a substantial mound with remnants of stone fortifications, including traces of a keep and surrounding defensive works that reflect both Norman and later medieval construction phases. The site remains an important example of Norman military architecture in the northwest of England and represents a significant phase of post-Conquest settlement and control in the Anglo-Norman colonisation of the region.
