Overview

History & significance

Egremont Castle is a Norman fortress situated in the parish of Egremont in Cumberland, founded in the early twelfth century by William de Meschines. The castle consists of a substantial motte-and-bailey earthwork, with a stone keep constructed on the mound, representing the transition from early Norman defensive architecture to more substantial masonry construction. The site demonstrates the strategic importance of the western Lake District frontier during the Norman period, controlling access to the valley and serving as a centre of baronial authority. Though substantially ruined, the surviving stonework and earthworks remain significant evidence of Norman military engineering and settlement in the north-west of England.
