Farrantemple fort is a bivallate rath situated in the townland of Farrantemple near Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The monument consists of two concentric defensive earthen banks surrounding a central raised platform, a characteristic feature of Early Christian period raths that served as defended homesteads for aristocratic families. Dating to the Early Christian period, the site reflects the settlement patterns and social hierarchy of early medieval Ireland, when such fortified enclosures functioned as residences and centres of local authority. The bivallate construction indicates a site of some status, as the additional defensive bank suggests greater investment in fortification than the more common single-banked examples.
