Field system S of Malham Cove is a medieval strip field system located in the limestone landscape of the Craven Lowlands near Malham in North Yorkshire. The field system comprises a series of narrow, parallel strips arranged across the hillside, characteristic of open field cultivation practices that were widespread throughout medieval England. The strips are bounded by lynchets, which are terraced banks formed through the accumulation of plough soil over successive seasons of agricultural use. The field system is broadly dated to the medieval period and represents an important example of the organised arable farming systems that supported rural communities in the Yorkshire Dales region.
