Gidleigh Castle is a small fortified manor house situated in Devon, dating to the late fourteenth century. The surviving remains consist of a square stone tower keep with walls of considerable thickness, positioned to command views across the surrounding moorland terrain. The castle was constructed during the medieval period when such fortified residences were common amongst the Devon gentry, serving both defensive and residential purposes. Today the fragmentary ruins represent an important example of late medieval military domestic architecture in the South West.
