Overview

History & significance

Gight Castle Dovecot is a historic circular dovecot situated approximately two hundred metres to the west-north-west of Gight Castle near Turriff in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The structure dates to the early modern period and represents the substantial agricultural infrastructure associated with the castle estate during its period of occupation. Built in the characteristic Scottish tradition, the dovecot would have served to provide a reliable source of fresh meat and eggs to the castle household throughout the year, whilst the birds' droppings offered valuable fertiliser for estate lands. The survival of this purpose-built structure demonstrates the economic importance of dovecot husbandry to substantial landholding families in early modern Scotland.
