Gillerthwaite and Dodsgill Beck is a complex of medieval upland settlements with associated field systems and cairnfields located in Cumberland. The monuments comprise the physical remains of two settlement sites situated at approximately 790 metres and 370 metres respectively from Low Gillerthwaite, reflecting medieval exploitation of marginal upland terrain. The field systems demonstrate the agricultural organisation of these communities, whilst the cairnfields indicate clearance of stones from cultivated ground, a characteristic feature of medieval upland farming in northern England. These remains date to the medieval period and represent settlement patterns adapted to the challenging environment of the Cumbrian uplands.
