Woundell Beck medieval settlement is a deserted medieval village with associated field systems and cairnfield located in the upland landscape of Cumberland, approximately 890 metres west of Low Gillerthwaite. The site comprises the earthwork remains of medieval habitation structures together with the relict agricultural infrastructure that supported settlement in this moorland environment, including both arable and pastoral features. The cairnfield represents clearance activity typical of medieval upland settlement, where stones were gathered from cultivated ground and deposited as cairns, a practice common in the high Pennine and Lake District valleys. The monument is designated for its importance in understanding medieval colonisation and land use in marginal upland areas, representing a phase of settlement expansion that was later abandoned as economic and climatic conditions shifted.
