Glevum is a Roman colonia founded in the late first century AD, likely in the 70s AD, in what is now Gloucester, Gloucestershire. Established as a settlement for Roman military veterans following the conquest of Britain, it served as an important administrative and military centre in the province of Britannia, controlling the crossing of the River Severn. The site preserves archaeological evidence of Roman occupation including structural remains, pottery, coins, and other artefacts distributed across the medieval city of Gloucester, which developed directly upon the Roman settlement. Glevum represents one of the most significant Romano-British urban centres in the west of Britain and its layout and defences continue to influence the topography of modern Gloucester.
