Group of six pillow mounds 470m north west of Barnston Farm is a scheduled ancient monument comprising six earthworks characteristic of medieval rabbit warrens, located in Dorset. Pillow mounds are artificial banks constructed to provide habitat and breeding grounds for rabbits, which were valued commodities in the medieval and early post-medieval periods, managed as a controlled food resource and source of fur. These earthworks, which typically measure several metres in length and width with a distinctive raised form, represent the physical infrastructure of organised rabbit husbandry practised on manorial estates from the twelfth century onwards. The survival of this group demonstrates the landscape management practices and economic priorities of medieval landholders in southern England.
