Hadrian's Wall is a Romano-British frontier monument constructed under the Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD, extending approximately 73 miles across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the River Tyne. The section between Banks Green Cottage and the roads to Lanercost and Garthside, spanning wall miles 52, 53 and 54 in Cumberland, preserves substantial portions of both the wall itself and the vallum, the defensive earthwork constructed to its south. This stretch exhibits typical characteristics of the wall's construction, with the stone barrier standing at variable heights and the vallum appearing as a substantial bank and ditch system that served to demarcate and control access along the frontier zone. The survival of both structural elements in this location demonstrates the physical infrastructure deployed by Roman Britain to maintain control of the northern frontier during the second and subsequent centuries of Roman occupation.
