Hadrian's Wall between Banks Green Cottage and the roads to Lanercost and Garthside is a section of the second-century Roman frontier running through Cumberland in northern England. This stretch, encompassing wall miles 52, 53 and 54, preserves substantial remains of both the Wall itself and the vallum, the parallel earthwork ditch-and-bank system that ran to the south of the Wall throughout much of its length. Constructed under the Emperor Hadrian from approximately AD 122 onwards, this segment demonstrates the characteristic Roman military engineering of the period, with the vallum serving administrative and logistical functions in controlling movement across the frontier zone. The section remains an important archaeological witness to the Roman occupation of Britain and the strategic organisation of this frontier system during the second and later centuries of the Roman period.
