Hadrian's Wall is a Roman defensive frontier built in the second century AD under the Emperor Hadrian to mark the northwestern boundary of the Roman Empire in Britain. This section of the wall, located in wall miles 62 and 63 near Walby in Cumberland, represents part of the continuous stone barrier that stretched across northern England from the Solway Firth to the North Tyne. The monument comprises the wall itself together with the vallum, a substantial earthwork consisting of a ditch flanked by two parallel mounds that ran south of the wall and served administrative functions within the frontier zone. This particular stretch survives as a scheduled ancient monument and remains an important record of Roman military engineering and frontier management during the second to fourth centuries AD.
