Hadrian's Wall between Brown Dikes and the field boundary east of turret 34a is a section of the Roman frontier fortification constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the early second century AD. This stretch, occupying wall miles 32, 33 and 34 in Northumberland, comprises substantial remains of the stone wall itself together with the associated vallum, the characteristic ditch and bank earthwork that runs parallel to the wall on its southern side. The site preserves evidence of Roman military engineering spanning approximately three miles, including the position of turret 34a, one of the small fortified structures that punctuated the wall at regular intervals to facilitate surveillance and communication along the frontier. The monuments represent a significant portion of the wall's original structural sequence and remain an essential record of Romano-British frontier architecture and the organization of the empire's northern defences in Britain.
