History & significance

Hadrian's Wall between the March Burn and Oatens Bank at Harlow Hill is a segment of the Roman frontier constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD. The monument comprises the stone wall itself and the vallum, a substantial earthwork consisting of a ditch with flanking mounds that ran parallel to the wall on its southern side. This section, encompassing wall miles 13, 14 and 15, represents part of the 80-mile defensive and administrative barrier erected across northern Britain from approximately AD 122 onwards. The physical remains at Harlow Hill preserve important evidence of Roman military engineering and frontier control during the height of the Roman occupation of Britain.
