Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall between Walltown Quarry East and Walltown Quarry West is a section of the Roman frontier barrier built in the second century AD under the Emperor Hadrian. This stretch of wall, located in wall mile 45 near Greenhead in Northumberland, represents one of the most substantially preserved portions of the entire structure, with the stone foundation and lower courses of the curtain wall surviving to considerable height. The section demonstrates the characteristic construction technique of the Hadrianic period, with local stone quarried and worked into a coursed rubble wall originally standing approximately two metres in height. Its location on the high ground of the Whin Sill presents the wall's engineering response to the topography of the frontier zone between Roman Britain and the unconquered lands to the north.
