Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall north of Kirkland House, Port Carlisle is a section of the Roman defensive frontier constructed in the second century AD under the Emperor Hadrian's reign. This portion of the wall, located in wall mile 78 within Cumberland, represents the northernmost extent of Roman Britain's most ambitious fortification project, built between approximately 122 and 128 AD. The surviving remains at this location preserve evidence of the wall's characteristic stone construction, though like many sections in the Solway Plain, erosion and later disturbance have affected its preservation. This stretch of the frontier served as a strategic barrier and administrative boundary across the width of Britain, linking the Solway Firth to the North Sea and representing one of the most significant archaeological monuments of Roman Britain.
