Hallyards Cottages moated settlement is a medieval defensive enclosure located south of Hallyards in Perthshire, Scotland. The site comprises a rectangular moat surrounding an area of habitation, a form of settlement fortification characteristic of the medieval period in Scotland, particularly from the thirteenth century onwards. Such moated settlements functioned as residences for minor landholders and provided modest defence through their water-filled ditches, reflecting the social and military organisation of rural medieval Scotland. The archaeological remains at Hallyards are testimony to the pattern of dispersed settlement and land management that characterised the medieval Perthshire landscape.
