Haltonchesters Roman fort is a second-century military installation situated on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, positioned to guard a crossing point of the River Tyne. The fort, known in antiquity as Onnum, was constructed during the reign of Hadrian and remained in occupation through the Roman period, serving as a cavalry fort of considerable strategic importance. The associated vallum, Hadrian's Wall itself, and the extensive civil settlement that developed outside the fort remain visible as earthwork and structural remains across the landscape between the fort's eastern boundary and the Fence Burn. The monument represents a significant example of the military infrastructure and frontier management of Roman Britain during the second and subsequent centuries of occupation.
