Overview

History & significance

Heath Farm Dyke Middle is a linear earthwork forming part of the defensive system of Camulodunum, the pre-Roman Iron Age settlement in Essex. Dating to the Late Iron Age, likely the first century BC, this dyke represents one of several parallel banks and ditches that enclosed and protected the oppidum, an extensive fortified territorial settlement. The earthwork survives as a substantial bank with associated ditch, characteristic of the engineering works constructed to defend this major centre of power in southern Britain during the final centuries before the Roman conquest. As part of Camulodunum's impressive circuit of defences, Heath Farm Dyke Middle demonstrates the strategic importance and resources invested in protecting this settlement, which would eventually become the Romano-British town of Colchester.
