Hoxa Battery and Balfour Battery is a pair of coastal defence complexes situated on Hoxa Head in Orkney, Scotland. These fortifications were constructed to protect the strategic naval anchorages of Scapa Flow, which has served as a major British naval base since the late nineteenth century. Built into the dramatic headland overlooking the waters between Mainland Orkney and South Ronaldsay, the batteries exemplify the layered coastal defence strategy developed to guard this vital military asset.
The batteries occupy the Middle Old Red Sandstone bedrock of the Hoxa Head promontory, where conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone formations provide a naturally commanding position above the seaward approaches. This geology afforded ideal conditions for gun emplacement and observation posts, allowing defenders to monitor and engage vessels entering the Flow. The site's topography made it one of a network of defensive installations positioned around Scapa's perimeter.
Today, the remains of gun emplacements, fortified structures and associated buildings survive as testimony to Orkney's role in British naval strategy. The batteries are protected by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument under reference SM3268, preserving these substantial military remains as an integral part of the islands' twentieth-century heritage.
