Roan Head is a World War II balloon barrage site situated 290 metres south-west of Golta in Orkney, Scotland. It is protected by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM10944. The site lies upon bedrock of Upper Old Red Sandstone, formed during the Late Devonian period, comprising conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone. This geological foundation provided a stable base for the defensive installations erected during the Second World War.
Balloon barrages were a critical element of Britain's air defence strategy during World War II. Tethered barrage balloons created obstacles to deter enemy aircraft and force them to fly higher, making them more vulnerable to anti-aircraft gunfire and fighter interception. The exposed, elevated position of Orkney made it strategically important for protecting shipping routes and naval installations in the North Sea and surrounding waters.
