Golta, World War II Z Battery and Light AA Battery, Flotta is a Second World War anti-aircraft installation situated on the island of Flotta in Orkney, Scotland. The site comprises remains of a Z Battery, a mobile anti-aircraft unit equipped with 40-mm Bofors guns, and a Light AA Battery, reflecting the intensity of air defence measures required to protect the strategic naval and industrial infrastructure of Orkney during the conflict. The installation was positioned to exploit the elevated terrain, with bedrock of Upper Old Red Sandstone conglomerate and sandstone providing stable foundations for gun emplacements and supporting structures.
The Z and Light AA Batteries represent the dual-layer defence strategy deployed across Orkney, where Flotta's position made it a particularly significant target.
