Overview

History & significance

Golta, World War II Z Battery and Light AA Battery, Flotta is a Second World War anti-aircraft defence installation located on the island of Flotta in Orkney, Scotland. The site comprises a Z Battery, a type of light anti-aircraft gun position, together with associated light anti-aircraft battery emplacements constructed during the period of heightened German air threat to British naval and military installations in northern waters. These batteries formed part of the extensive air defence network protecting the strategically important anchorages and naval facilities in Orkney during the latter stages of the war. The physical remains reflect the dispersed layout typical of anti-aircraft positions of this period, positioned to provide overlapping fields of fire against attacking aircraft.
