The Icehouse with associated iceyard at Great Moreton Hall is a nineteenth-century structure located seventy metres east of the hall itself in Cheshire. It comprises a brick-built underground chamber designed for the storage of ice harvested during winter months, a technology that became increasingly prevalent amongst gentry and affluent households during the Georgian and Victorian periods. The associated iceyard provided the working space necessary for cutting and storing blocks of ice before their placement in the insulated icehouse chamber. This monument represents the practical infrastructure that supported the domestic comfort and food preservation practices of a substantial country estate during the industrial era.
