Icehouse with associated iceyard at Great Moreton Hall is a nineteenth-century ice storage facility located seventy metres east of the hall itself in Cheshire. The structure comprises an underground ice storage chamber together with the adjoining yard from which ice would have been harvested and transported for use in domestic refrigeration before the advent of mechanical cooling. Such facilities were characteristic of substantial country estates during the Georgian and early Victorian periods, reflecting the considerable effort required to maintain a supply of ice throughout the warmer months. The monument survives as evidence of the practical infrastructure that supported the operation of a major gentry or aristocratic household.
