Inver fort is an Iron Age fort, post-medieval house and look-out post situated 570 metres south-east of a larger contemporary fortified site in Caithness, north Scotland. The monument occupies a location founded on Middle Old Red Sandstone bedrock, a geologically mixed layer of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone laid down during the Middle Devonian period. This solid foundation would have provided the Iron Age inhabitants with a defensible position across the rolling landscape of the far north.
The site represents two distinct phases of occupation separated by over a thousand years. The Iron Age fort reflects the settlement patterns of pre-Roman Scotland, when such structures formed the focal points of territorial control and community organisation. The later post-medieval house and associated look-out post indicate renewed occupation and fortification during the sixteenth century onwards, when such elevated positions served both domestic and surveillance purposes across the Caithness coastlands.
Today, Inver fort is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM5073, reflecting its significance as a multi-period archaeological site that illuminates settlement continuity and changing land use across two major eras of Scottish history.
