Overview

History & significance

Kemp's Castle is a post-medieval settlement and associated field system located in Roxburghshire, Scotland, situated approximately six hundred metres west-southwest of another contemporary settlement complex. The site comprises the remains of domestic occupation and agricultural infrastructure characteristic of the post-medieval period, reflecting patterns of rural settlement and land use in the Scottish Borders during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. The field systems visible at the site demonstrate the organization of arable and pastoral land management typical of this era, with evidence of both permanent structures and the wider landscape modifications undertaken by the inhabitants. The settlement's physical remains and field patterns provide important archaeological evidence for understanding post-medieval rural economy and settlement distribution in the border regions of southern Scotland.
