A Shielings 460m ENE of Kildonan Museum is a pastoral settlement site located in Inverness-shire, Scotland. Shielings were temporary dwellings used seasonally by herders during the transhumance system, whereby cattle were moved to upland pastures in summer months, a practice prevalent in the Scottish Highlands from the medieval period onwards through to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The site is situated in the landscape historically associated with pastoral agriculture, reflecting the traditional Highland economy and settlement patterns. Such archaeological remains document the material culture and spatial organization of seasonal pastoral communities that constituted an integral component of Hebridean and Highland land use.
