History & significance

The Wrekin is a large multivallate hillfort of Iron Age date situated on a prominent hill in Shropshire, England. The defensive works comprise multiple concentric banks and ditches that encircle the summit, with the main stronghold occupying approximately twelve acres at the hilltop. In addition to the Iron Age defences, the site contains a Bronze Age round barrow and evidence of a Late Bronze Age settlement, indicating occupation and activity across an extended chronological span. Post-medieval and twentieth-century remains are also present, including military installations from the Second World War period, demonstrating the site's continued strategic value through different historical periods.
