Overview

History & significance

Length of medieval town wall, sally port and interval tower is a fortified segment of the medieval defensive circuit that enclosed Ludlow in Shropshire. The surviving remains comprise a length of stone wall with an interval tower and sally port, dating principally to the 13th and 14th centuries when Ludlow's defences were constructed and maintained as part of the town's established mercantile prosperity. The sally port provided a means of making sorties from the town during siege or conflict, whilst the interval tower functioned as a defensive strongpoint along the perimeter wall. These structures represent significant surviving examples of medieval urban military architecture in the English border country.
