Little Kinnaber is a post-medieval palisaded enclosure situated in Angus, Scotland, approximately 150 metres west of the main settlement at Kinnaber. The monument is protected by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM6102. Palisaded enclosures of this period typically served as defensive structures or stock compounds, their wooden fortifications providing practical protection for livestock or goods rather than the stone fortifications of earlier centuries.
The enclosure is built upon bedrock of the Stratheden Group formation, a geological sequence of sandstone and conglomerate laid down during the Late Devonian period. This interbedded rock would have provided a firm foundation for the wooden stakes that once formed the palisade, whilst the sandstone in particular could have been quarried locally for associated structures or hardstanding within the enclosed area.
The post-medieval period witnessed considerable changes in rural settlement patterns and land use across eastern Scotland.
